Для опису відношень між текстом-джерелом і цільовим текстом використовували різні означення, часто у бінарній опозиції, такі як буквальний переклад :: вільний переклад чи дослівний переклад :: переклад по смислу. З появоюу другій половині ХХ ст. систематичніших, чи «наукових», думок про переклад, найширшого використання при описі таких відношень набуло поняття «еквівалентності». Що є спільним для теорій, що ґрунтуються на еквівалентності, так це спроба визначити, які тексти пов’язані із текстом-джерелом відношеннями перекладу, а відтак виявити критерії, які б вирізняли переклад від інших видів вторинних творів, або текстів, створених на основі інших текстів (пор. Koller 1995).
