Általánosságban a hozzáférhetőség fogalma arra utal, hogy egy termék, szolgáltatás, környezet, fogalom vagy akár személy milyen mértékben használható, elérhető, érthető vagy hozzáférhető egy adott célra. Azt is jelenti, hogy az akadálymentesített terméket valamilyen módon manipulálták annak érdekében, hogy érzékeljék vagy „hozzáférhetővé” tegyék. Ebben az értelemben használják a jelzőt például a kézikönyv Gyermekirodalom és fordítás szócikkében: ˝A szöveget le lehet egyszerűsíteni annak érdekében, hogy hozzáférhetőbbé váljon […].˝ (kiemelés tőlem). Nyilvánvaló, hogy a fordítás maga is a hozzáférhetőség egy formája: hozzáférést biztosít az idegen nyelvű szövegekhez, és ezen keresztül az azokat létrehozó kultúrához.
