ローカリゼーションとは、国外の市場で求められる要件とそのロケール〔言語と地域の組合せ。例えばEN-USは英語-米国、EN-AUは英語-オーストラリア〕に合わせて、対象となるデジタルコンテンツを言語的かつ文化的に適合することである。これには、デジタル情報を地球規模で発信するサービスの提供と、それに伴う情報の多言語化を管理するためのテクノロジーが含まれる。したがってローカリゼーション工程は、翻訳作業(ビデオゲーム、ウェブサイト、ユーザー支援など多様なデジタル素材の翻訳)とプラスアルファの作業を伴うことになる。このような定義は、LISA(2010)やダン(Dunne 2006)の定義とは対照的に、「デジタルコンテンツ」の翻訳であることに明確に焦点を合わせており、また多言語化の「管理」をローカリゼーションの重要な作業の一つとして挙げている。
