Kaunokirjallinen kääntäminen [Literary translation]

Kaunokirjallisella kääntämisellä tarkoitetaan yleensä kaunokirjallisten alkuteosten kaunokirjallista kääntämistä, jossa kääntäjän odotetaan säilyttävän tai tavalla tai toisella toisintavan lähdetekstin esteettiset intentiot tai vaikutukset. Kaunokirjallisella kääntämisellä voidaan myös viitata ei-kaunokirjallisten tekstien kaunokirjalliseen kääntämiseen (esim. uskonnolliset tekstit). Kaunokirjallisia tekstejä voidaan kääntää myös ei-kaunokirjallisin menetelmin (esim. runon sanatarkka käännös opetuskäyttöön tai filologiseen tutkimukseen). Pohjimmaltaan siinä, mitkä tekstit luokitellaan kaunokirjallisiksi teksteiksi tai käännöksiksi, on kyse normeista, konventioista ja viestintäfunktioista, ei pelkästään tekstin itsensä piirteistä (ks.
