Поняття «інституція» є одним із основних понять соціологічних теорій (див. Соціологія перекладу (Sociology of translation)). Інституції вивчають, а саме це поняття визначають і перевизначають не тільки в соціології, але й, наприклад, в економіці, політології та організаційних дослідженнях. Інституція виявилася плідним та універсальним поняттям, проте ці ознаки одночасно спричинюють загальновідомі труднощі його застосування через можливості різного тлумачення та змішування різних значень цього терміна.
