Функціонування влади й ідеології – це передумова використання мови. Отже, переклад(translation), як і будь-яка діяльність, що пов’язана з мовою, з одного боку, формує владні відносини та відповідні індивідуальну й колективну ідеології, а з іншого – формується ними. Хоча ідеологію й теорію та практику перекладу взаємопов’язано з прадавніх часів (див. блискучий історичний аналіз Пітера Фосета (Fawcette 1998)), важливість всеохоплюючого впливу ідеології на переклад досі не усвідомлено належним чином. Більше того, порівняно з іншими гуманітарними та суспільними науками, перекладознавству(Translation Studies) бракує теоретичних досліджень ідеології самої по собі. Всеохоплюючий вплив ідеології на переклад пов’язано з усвідомленням того, що реконтекстуалізація мовного матеріалу в процесі перекладу потребує порівняльного аналізу цінностей та переконань, притаманних двом мовним спільнотам.
