Загальноприйнятим вважається твердження, що глобалізація – це визначальна риса високої (або пізньої) сучасності (модерну) (late modernity) (Friedman 2005). Ентоні Ґідденс у широко цитованому визначенні стверджує, що глобалізація – це « інтенсифікація світових соціальних відносин, які поєднують віддалені місцевості таким чином, що події на місцях формуються під впливом тих подій, що відбуваються за багато миль від них, і навпаки » (1990: 64). Звісно, передумовою такої « інтенсифікації » є наявність якихось способів поєднання цих віддалених місцевостей ».
