Etnograafilised käsitlused on eriti viimastel aastatel tõlkeuuringutes üha enam levinud. Tõlketeadlased on mõistnud etnograafia kui uurimismeetodi ja käsitluse mitmekülgseid võimalusi tõlkepraktika uurimisel kõige laiemas mõttes ja väga erinevates valdkondades, nagu meditsiinitõlge (Angelelli 2000), asüüli taotlemise toimingud (Inghilleri, 2003), tõlkimine Euroopa Komisjonis ja Euroopa Parlamendis (Koskinen 2008) või ilukirjanduse tõlkimine (Flynn 2007). Lisaks on leitud, et etnograafia on ka sobiv meetod tõlketeaduses. Tõlketeadlased on uurinud tõlkimist nii klassikaliste kui ka kõige uuemate etnograafiliste meetoditega (Sturge 1997, 2007; Bachmann Medik 2006).
