Az ógörög μπθεια szóból származó „empátia” kifejezés a huszadik század elején került a német nyelven keresztül az angolba (Stueber 2008/2019), ahol „beleérzés” jelentéssel bír. A hétköznapi angol nyelvben valószínűleg ez a jelentés jutna először eszünkbe. A formálisabb megfogalmazások gyakran megkülönböztetnek egy érzelmi és egy kognitív komponenst (Stueber 2008/2019).
