Dérivé du grec ancien ἐμπάθεια, le terme « empathie » a trouvé son chemin en anglais via l’allemand au début du XXe siècle (Stueber 2008/2019), où il en était venu à signifier « ressentir ». En anglais de tous les jours, c’est probablement le sens qui viendrait à l’esprit en premier. Des définitions plus formelles distinguent souvent une composante affective et une composante cognitive (Stueber 2008/2019).
