     لقد تطور مفهوما التوطين والتغريب خلال السنوات الأخيرة ليتخذا شكل اختزال مناسب لرسم معالم طريقتين متقابلتين (إستراتيجيتين) لعملية الترجمة (انظر ترانزلايشن ستراتجيز أند تكتيكس Translation strategies and tactics) وذلك بفقدهما في العديد من الحالات لرابطهما (الفينوتي) السابق لصالح أخلاقيات الترجمة، وأصبحا صنفين تحليليين في مجال الدراسات الوصفية حيث أنهما لا قيمة لهما كما يُزعم في كثير من الأحيان. ويستعمل التوطين غالبا للإشارة إلى تكييف السياق الثقافي أو مصطلحات ثقافة محددة (انظر تشيلدرنز ليتيتشر أند ترانزلايشن؛ بايبل ترانزلايشن؛ رييليا Chidren’s Literature and Translation; Bible translation; Realia)، والتغريب إلى الحفاظ على السياق الثقافي الأصل من حيث مكونات المحيط والأسماء، إلخ. وقد وجد المصطلحان مكانا لهما أيضا في الدراسات التي كان الهدف من ورائها إما دحض أو إثبات ما يسمى بفرضية إعادة الترجمة (انظر ريترانزلايشن Retranslation).
