У вступній частині до свого двотомного видання «Дискурсивні дослідження» (Discourse Studies) Тьон ван Дейк говорить про «повсюдну присутність терміна ‘дискурс’ у гуманітарних та суспільних науках і навіть у засобах масової інформації» (van Dijk, 1997: 1), стверджуючи також, що «поняття дискурсу за своєю суттю є нечітким» (там само), про що свідчать і розбіжності у його різноманітних дефініціях, а також у низці аналітичних тлумачень. Це однаковою мірою стосується і способу, яким термін «аналіз дискурсу» або «дискурс-аналіз» застосовується у перекладознавстві.
