عند الحديث عن الاتجاهية في إطار الترجمة التحريرية والترجمة الفورية، يكون التركيز على إتجاه النقل، أي ما إذا كان المترجم التحريري أو المترجم الفوري يشتغل في إطار لغته الأم أو اللغة المهيمنة أو غيرها. إلا أن الدراسات الترجمية الحديثة عادة ما تستعمل هذا المصطلح لتشير إلى الحالة التي يشتغل فيها المترجم التحريري أو المترجم الفوري باللغة الأجنبية. ولوصف هذه العملية استخدم الباحثون العديد من التسميات مثل "التعجيم" (لادميرال 1979) و"الترجمة الخدماتية" (نيومارك 1988) و"الترجمة  العكسية" ( بيبي 1996) و"الترجمة المعاكسة" و"الترجمة إلى اللغة الثانية" (كامبل 1998) و"الترجمة إلى اللغة غير الأساسية" ( كروسمان و آخرون 2000) و"الترجمة إلى اللغة غير الأم "(بوكورن 2005) ثم "الترجمة أ ــ ب" (كيلي و آخرون  2003: 33ــ42)، ولقيت هذه الترجمة مؤخرا اهتمامًا أكاديميًّا كبيرًا.
