Вивчення роботи усних перекладачів повсякчас спонукало дослідників усного перекладу збирати зразки промов автентичних мовців (або вихідні « тексти » / « тексти оригіналу » – ТО, тобто транскрипти усного мовлення) та лінгвістичний продукт усних перекладачів (або цільові тексти / тексти перекладу – ТП). Перші спроби збирання таких текстів охопили лише кількох перекладачів та показали неверифіковані і розрізнені дані (Shlesinger 1998) на підтвердження семантичних зсувів і операцій з текстами. Непідтвердженими вони вважалися не тому, що не мали методологічного підґрунтя, а тому що самі спостереження зводилися до нечисленних прикладів, відтак не могли вважатися репрезентативними або типовими для ширшої усноперекладацької популяції. Зокрема, йдеться про корпус у мовній парі з німецької на французьку, зібраний Lederer (1981). Це три години записів одного мовця і двох усних перекладачів для ілюстрації Інтерпретативної теорії перекладу (як процитовано у Р.Сеттона (Setton 2011: 39). Ці збірки були різними за обсягом, мовними комбінаціями та метою, але до запровадження інструментів і методики Корпусної лінгвістики (КЛ) це були просто збірки ТО-ТП (набрані тексти, які зберігалися у комп’ютерах або на технологічно складніших цифрових пристроях), які аналізувалися вручну.
