Більшість наукового дискурсу про письмовий і усний переклад тією чи іншою мірою сформульовано через призму конфлікту. Якщо деякі автори зосереджуються на внутрішніх протиріччях, які притаманні процесу перекладу (оригінал проти перекладу, адекватність проти прийнятності, буквальний переклад проти вільного перекладу, семантичний переклад проти комунікативного перекладу, формальна відповідність проти динамічної еквівалентності – ось лише деякі з дихотомій і сконструйованих опозицій, які лежать в основі дискусій про переклад і класифікацій про підходи та стратегії), то інші представляють переклад як акт агресії (див. Перекладацькі стратегії і тактики (Translation strategies and tactics)).
