All human communication requires a set of diverse and complex cognitive activities. Like-wise, any type of translation is inherently a complex cognitive activity which requires from individuals performing it a set of knowledge and abilities (see Competence) applied while translating: the translation process. The mastery of this set of specific and relevant cognitive traits singles out those individuals who can successfully translate. Such traits led Hurtado Albir (2001: 375) to define the process of translation as a complex cognitive process which has an interactive and non-linear nature, encompassing controlled and uncontrolled processes, and requiring problem solving, decision making and the use of translation strategies and tactics.
