Terminology — From Wüster to AI: The case of Germany and Austria
The concept of a centralised institution for general language policy or terminology planning of the kind that exists in several other European countries has not been implemented in Germany or Austria. Instead, various public and private institutions play a role in these matters. For example, according to a decision of the state ministers of culture, Duden (n.d.) has been declared responsible for orthographical questions. A joint commission of German, Austrian and Swiss delegates has produced a far-reaching revision of the rules for German orthography that was implemented in 1996. This commission is currently involved in the discussion about inclusive and gender-specific language standards for the German language. In addition, the Institut für Deutsche Sprache [Institute for German Language] (IDS) in Mannheim provides central research facilities, including an extremely large library of dictionaries and various online corpora. It also conducts wide-ranging research projects on different aspects of language and language resources.
