Terminology as the key to language policy: The French case

Terminology planning in France is often seen as emblematic, the prototype of official action focused on promoting the creation and effective use of autonomously formed terms. Assessing globally just how far this reputation corresponds to reality is beyond the scope of a single chapter such as this one, but the following description of the official, institutional bodies, how they are made up and how they work, their interaction with other bodies and the many attempts at evaluating their effectiveness is designed to help readers form their own opinions.
