This chapter gives a general overview of the development and state-of-the-art of terminology planning and work of the Finnish language and sets it in the historical context of language planning in Finland. Section 2 discusses the road of the Finnish language from various spoken dialects to a fully developed language with a written language and a unified standard language as well as a language with terminologies for all the fields of culture, education and science. Section 3 presents the organizations that are active in language planning and terminology planning today, starting from the leading organizations and then giving some examples of field-specific organizations and terminological infrastructure projects. Section 4 discusses special features of the methods for terminology work and creating Finnish terms, especially loanwords, as well as attitudes towards them and the English influence. Section 5 summarizes the development of Finnish terminology planning, its relation to language planning, and discusses some trends for the future as seen by both language and terminology planners.
