Basque (Euskera) is the characteristic language of the Basque Country, which encompasses adjacent parts of northern Spain and southwestern France (see Figure 1). Despite being a minoritized language across its entire region, Basque holds different legal statuses in the various regions. On the Spanish side, the Law for the Normalization of the Use of Basque (1982) made Basque co-official together with Spanish in the so-called Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (ACBC), which includes the territories of Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Araba. However, in the territory of Nafarroa, Basque is only recognized as an official language in the “Basque-speaking zones”, as determined by the Navarrese Law on Basque (1986), which defines the areas where Basque is official. Finally, in the French Basque Country, the legal status of Basque is radically different, since French is the only official language of the French Republic.
