In their Nouveau Dictionnaire Encyclopédique des Sciences du Langage, Oswald Ducrot and Jean-Marie Schaeffer (1995: 213), referring to Saussure, specify that the notion of sign was originally basic in linguistics. Yet they remark that with the increasing importance of generative linguistics, the sign became an almost negligeable element in modern linguistic theories and that it was more and more considered a semiotic category.
