Linguistic explanation

Linguistic explanation is intelligible only against the backdrop of explanations generally. This in turn requires an examination of the relationship of explanations to theories and an appreciation of the findings of recent metascience on the nature of scientific inquiry. In this way, the principles of explanation can be seen to frame both linguistic and pragmatic explanation.
