Control phenomena

Control, as the term is generally understood in syntax, concerns the interpretation of non-finite clauses such as infinitivals or gerunds. It may be defined as a coreference relation between the understood subject of a non-finite clause and some other element that provides its interpretation. This element is called its controller. Some different types of controllers are illustrated in (1):
